What is a voyage estimator?
A voyage estimator calculates the full financial result of a dry bulk cargo voyage. It computes revenues from freight, deducts all voyage costs (bunker fuel, port disbursements, canal dues, broker commission), and outputs profitability metrics including voyage P&L and TCE. Charterers and shipowners use it to evaluate whether a fixture is worth taking at a given freight rate.
What costs are included in a voyage estimate?
A complete voyage estimate includes: bunker fuel costs (VLSFO for open sea, MGO in ECA zones), port disbursement allowances (loading and discharging ports), Suez Canal or Panama Canal tolls, broker commission (typically 1.25%–5%), and any extra port costs or port-specific charges. Operating costs (OPEX) like crew, maintenance and insurance are typically handled separately in a time charter context.
How is voyage P&L calculated?
Voyage P&L = Gross Freight Revenue − Total Voyage Costs. Costs include bunker (VLSFO + MGO), port DA at each port, canal dues, and broker commission. The net result divided by total voyage days gives the TCE (Time Charter Equivalent), which can be compared against the prevailing time charter market rate.
